The Basic Jump

  1. Hold the ends of the ropes in both hands with your elbows close to your body and your arms bent. If your rope has handles, your thumbs should be on top of them.
  2. Start with the rope behind your heels and swing it over your head. When it comes to your feet, jump just high enough to get over it.
  3. Jump on the balls of your feet (the big pad of your foot behind your toes), with your feet together and your knees slightly bent. At first, you can include a little bounce step between skips. As you pick up speed, though, try to do a single jump each time the rope passes under your feet. Your hands should be making small circles, but keep your elbows close to your body.
