SKOOKUM ENVIRONMENTAL
(also referred to as Skookum Recycle Services)

Skookum Environmental Services, has contracted with Jefferson County Public Works Department since 1993 to maintain and operate the Jefferson County Recycle Center. By contract Skookum is responsible for the management and servicing of Public recyclables collection box sites county wide; the processing and marketing of recyclables received from public sites and from residential curbside and commercial collection haulers in Jefferson County and the City of Port Townsend.

In addition to the resource recovery plan Skookum contracts with the County to provide a work-training program for Jefferson County adult residences with developmental disabilities at the recycle facility.

The recycling center is also proud to announce we now offer electronics recycling. You can bring your old or broken TV's, VCR's, personal computers and monitors, cell phones, printers, and cameras to our site on County Landfill Rd in Port Townsend. For 35¢ a pound, we'll box up and send your electronics to a state-of-the-art recycling center in Tacoma. There, the equipment will be disassembled and any salvagable metals or components can be recycled or reused. And any data on a personal computer hard drive or cell phone will be destroyed.

The recycle center is located at 301 County Landfill Road, just outside of Port Towwnsend off of Jacob Miller Road. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. It is closed during most National Holidays.

The following items are accepted at the site to be recycled:

  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • Newspaper
  • Mixed paper
  • Aluminum cans
  • Tinned Cans
  • Clear glass containers
  • Green and brown glass containers
  • Plastic PET #1 containers
  • HDPE #2 containers, all colors

In addition to our processing facility located off of Jacob Miller road we service several drop off sites located through out Jefferson County that accept the above listed commodities as well. Those sites include the following:

Quilcene Solid Waste Drop Box Site
Port Ludlow Village Store
Port Hadlock Elkins Road
Brinnon Dosewallips State Park
Kala Point
Chimicum School (no glass accepted at this location)
Indian Island Naval base (no glass accepted at this location)

This is the Skookum Recycle Mission Statement:

We are dedicated to diverting all possible recyclables from the Jefferson County waste stream in a clean and efficient manner. We will empower all our employees and provide an excellent vocational training center for the "at risk" people in our community.

We are dedicated to creating a "world class" service oriented recycle center that is responsive to our contractual obligations and to the recycle needs of the community.

We will maintain a work environment that is both flexible and stable.
